Murdoch DE BAAR (1945-2011)
Murdoch De Baar was born to a farming family at Einhoven, Holland, and migrated with them to Queensland in 1952, bringing small insect collection. Family lived first at Coochiemudlo Island then Petrie. Attended St Columban’s School at Caboolture from Year 6 and won prize for insect display in Junior year. Joined Forestry Dept. as trainee in 1965 and served in many isolated forest stations in SE Qld and Fraser Island. Natural history skills inclined him to pest assessment and life histories in plantations. Rose to Forest Technician and transferred to Indooroopilly Forestry Labs in late 1970s. In charge of Forestry Insect Collection until retirement 2006. Obtained many host records by insectary rearing. Handled most public enquiries. Had strong private interest in butterflies, longicorns and scarab beetles and developed a fine collection donated to Queensland Museum in 2013. Exploratory field work in Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Many publications on butterfly biology and distribution with strong taxonomic interest in Elodina and Euploea. Special interest in mangrove and mistletoe insects. Gave many talks and displays to schools and clubs. Served on ESQ Council 1983-87.
