William Alexander MCDOUGALL (1903-1982)
Bill (“Mac”) McDougall was born in Goondiwindi, attended secondary education at Ipswich Grammar, then University of Queensland BSc 1930, MSc 1934, DSc 1949. Appointed a Cadet in the Dept of Agiculture and Stock in 1926. Transferred to Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations in 1928 as an Entomologist at Meringa (1928-31) then Mackay (1931-1949). Researched cane insect pests as well as native rats as pests of sugar cane and carriers of Weils’ Disease. His MSc dealt with elucidation of the sugar cane elaterid wireworm problem. Rejoined the Entomology Branch, Department of Agriculture and Stock /Primary Industries in Brisbane 1949 as a Senior Entomologist, then Chief Entomologist in 1953, then Government Entomologist in 1959 until his retirement in 1971. Earned one of the early DSc degrees from UQ for work on rodent ecology and control. Overall responsibility for departmental entomology research programmes and publications on insects of agricultural importance, pesticide registration, fauna regulation and research, and apiculture regulation. Valuable mentor of younger entomologists in Queensland DPI whom he encouraged to undertake higher degrees. Participated in national entomology policy formulation. President of Entomological Society of Queensland 1952.
