GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING ENTRIES FOR THE ARCHIVE OF PAST QUEENSLAND ENTOMOLOGISTS
1. Criteria for inclusion of a person in the Archive
The person should be deceased and should have resided for part of his/her life in Queensland. Apart from that we wish the criteria to be as inclusive as possible. Any person, amateur or professional, trained or not trained, employed in entomology or not, who has made a contribution to entomology or arachnology in Queensland shall be eligible for inclusion. Those who have resided elsewhere but have spent significant periods of time collecting in Queensland and have made those collections available for general study may be eligible.
2. Size, format and coverage of the entry.
Please examine existing entries on the ESQ website for format, and follow the layout closely. Entries should not exceed about 250 words. Writing style should be brief and telegraphic. Avoid judgemental comments, hyperbole and praise – the object is to present the synoptic facts of the person’s life. Give special attention to the part of the person’s life spent in Queensland, but give brief coverage of their life elsewhere. Try to cover place of birth and death, education, places lived, employment history, areas where collecting or research undertaken, close collaborators, major achievements and service to ESQ. Where available, cite one or two published obituaries or biographies where extra information can be sought.
3. Portraits
Each entry should include a portrait of the person. These may be colour or black and white and should preferably be supplied as an electronic image. The preferred image is a clear head and shoulders portrait that shows the person’s face clearly. If choice is available, a portrait of a person in prime of life, rather than in their dotage, should be selected.
4. Before you start.
If you wish to prepare an Archive entry for a person, please advise Geoff Monteith who will ensure that the person is not being treated by someone else and will add the name to the list of those under preparation.
5. Submission and final editing.
Please send your entry to Geoff Monteith who will liaise with you on final editing before passing to Kathy Ebert who will load the entry into the website. Updates of new entries being loaded will be regularly printed in the News Bulletin.
