The Society's emblem, chosen in 1973, on the 50th anniversary of the Society, is the King Stag Beetle, Phalacrognathus muelleri (Macleay), Family Lucanidae (Coleoptera). Its magnificent purple and green colouration makes it one of the most attractive beetle species in Australia. It is restricted to the rainforests of northern Queensland.

Gerald Hill

Gerald Freer HILL (1880-1954)

Born Windsor, Victoria. Government Entomologist in NT 1912-17 where he developed an interest in termites. Research Fellow at University of Melbourne 1918-19, working on sheep blowfly. Entomologist at the Australian Institute of Tropical Medicine in Townsville 1919-22, working mainly on mosquitoes. Entomologist at the National Museum, Melbourne 1923-26. Entomologist with CSIR, 1926-41, working on termites. Author of major monograph on Australian termites, Termites (Isoptera) from the Australian Region, in 1942.
