Walter Arthur SMITH (1919-1973)
Arthur Smith was born in Bundaberg and schooled to Junior level there. Appointed as Cadet then Assistant Entomologist in Department of Agriculture and Stock in Brisbane in 1934 and matriculated as an evening student. Commenced evening studies at University of Queensland which were interrupted by service in WW2 1941-46 as electronics specialist reaching rank of Lieutenant. Returned to entomologist position in 1947 and graduated BSc from UQ 1948. Posted as Entomologist to Ayr in 1948 then as Senior Entomologist to Nambour in 1955 before transfer to HQ Brisbane in early 1960s until death in 1973. At Ayr worked on pest management in tobacco and other tropical crops. At Nambour worked on pest management in citrus and small crops. Spent six months in US in 1957 seeking a biocontrol agent against Noogoora burr and researching pests of cotton, citrus and tobacco. In Brisbane completed work on control of cotton pests for MSc from UQ in 1963. Specialised in thrips taxonomy and mentored newly appointed field staff. Active member of the Entomological Society of Queensland and served as Secretary in 1941.
